The Pacific Resilience Program Phase 2 (PREP II) comprises a series of projects aimed at enhancing the resilience of coastal infrastructure in the densely populated areas of the capital Majuro and the island of Ebeye.
This program falls under the auspices of the Pacific Resilience Program and is funded by the World Bank and the Green Climate Fund. The RMI Government is responsible for its implementation.
Initially planned to span a period of five years, the implementation period for PREP II was subsequently extended to seven years, closing on June 2026, thanks to additional financing.
The NAP or the National Adaptation Plan, is a document that will act as a guide to the RMI’s approach to dealing with the medium and longer-term impacts of climate change on its atolls and islands.
It is a protective seawall on Ebeye Island that will provide valuable protection for housing, businesses, infrastructure and the resting places of many ancestors from the relentless impact of extreme wave wash-over that often accompanies king tides and storm surges. The seawall will also afford some protection against sea level rise out to around 2070 (up to approx.20” (0.5m)) and will improve safety and amenity for this small island community of some 8,000 folk.
