Embracing a Sustainable Future: Cabinet Endorses Sea Level Rise Adaptation Policy (SLRAP)

September 19, 20230
We are delighted to announce a significant leap forward in our journey towards #ClimateResilience. The Cabinet’s formal endorsement of the SLRAP brings us one step closer to fulfilling the visionary #NationalAdaptationPlan (NAP) in the Marshall Islands. Chief Secretary, Kino Kabua, expressed the policy’s vital purpose—to guide our nation in effectively addressing the profound impact of #ClimateChange, particularly with regards to rising sea levels.
“As a small atoll nation we can do little to directly impact sea level rise. However, we now have a tool which provides direction for our leaders when making decisions regarding how the nation will adapt to issues such as more frequent wash-over events, the salination of our drinking water, and the widespread loss of land. These are all expected to become more prevalent over the coming decades.” she stated.
Part 1 of the policy focuses on monitoring sea level rise, providing early warnings, and enhancing preparedness for the tipping point—when unprotected atolls will encounter extreme difficulties sustaining life due to a rise of 20 inches from the 2000 baseline. Part 2 of the Policy champions an inclusive dialogue, amplifying the voices of women, youth, and the disabled in resolving critical issues that will shape our nation’s adaptation path.
All Marshallese will experience the impact of rising sea levels one way or another, and to foster collective engagement and recognition of this reality, the Chief Secretary emphasized the importance of a campaign of awareness and involvement over the coming months.
