The Pacific Resilience Program Phase 2 (PREP II) comprises a series of projects aimed at enhancing the resilience of coastal infrastructure in the densely populated areas of the capital Majuro and the island of Ebeye.
Taking Action for a Sustainable Future
In order to address the pressing threat of climate change and the accompanying rise in sea levels, the RMI government has established multiple agencies to jointly identify and implement effective approaches to adaptation and mitigation. These measures include upgrading critical infrastructure, managing coastal areas, and developing community-based education programs.
Through concerted efforts, these agencies aim to minimize the adverse impacts of rising sea levels on the people and ecosystems of the RMI. The preeminent agency among these is the Climate Change Directorate, which spearheads the national response to climate change, and collaborates with esteemed organisations such as the Pacific Community (SPC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
The Climate Change Directorate
The RMI Climate Change Directorate is the government agency responsible for leading and coordinating the country’s efforts to address the impacts of climate change. Their main functions include policy development and implementation, advocacy and awareness-raising, research and data collection, capacity-building, and international cooperation.
Ministry of Works, Infrastructure and Utilities
The RMI Ministry of Public Works, Infrastructure and Utilities is the government department responsible for the planning, development, and maintenance of public infrastructure such as roads, bridges, buildings, and other physical facilities. Its primary focus is to ensure that the country’s infrastructure is in good condition and is able to meet the needs of the people.
National Disaster Management Office
The RMI National Disaster Management Office is the government agency or department responsible for coordinating and managing disaster preparedness, disaster response, disaster risk reduction and disaster recovery efforts at the national level.
Office of the Chief Secretary
The RMI Office of the Chief Secretary is the government department responsible for overseeing the operations and administration of a particular government agency or institution. The duties of the Chief Secretary include serving as an advisor to the head of the government or to other high-level officials, and providing guidance and expertise on matters related to the Office’s area of jurisdiction.
Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority
The Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority is the government agency responsible for sustainable management of the country’s marine resources and fisheries. Some of their key functions include licensing and monitoring of fishing activities, development of the fisheries industry, and conservation and protection of marine resources.
Environmental Protection Authority
The RMI Environmental Protection Authority is a government-funded statutory body with affiliations to the Ministry of Health and Environment. The organization is entrusted with improving and protecting the nation’s environment. Its pivotal roles encompass nature conservation, waste management, public sanitation, monitoring public and marine water quality, and promoting environmental education.
Kwajalein Atoll Development Authority
The RMI Kwajalein Atoll Development Authority (KADA) is the development authority established to serve the principal landowners of Kwajalein and local communities including those residents on Ebeye Island. Its primary objective is to manage, administer and develop Kwajalein Atoll, which holds great significance in the central Pacific Ocean as host of a strategic US Military Garrison. A key responsibility is to encourage and facilitate economic and social development in Kwajalein Atoll while also promoting the welfare of its inhabitants. In this regard, KADA have been heavily involved in all activities related to development of the Ebeye seawall.
