About PREP ll

Making the Change for Generations to Come

The Pacific Resilience Program Phase 2 (PREP II) falls under the auspices of the Pacific Resilience Program and is funded by the World Bank and the Green Climate Fund. The RMI Government is responsible for its implementation.

It comprises a series of projects aimed at enhancing the resilience of coastal infrastructure in the densely populated areas of the capital Majuro and the island of Ebeye. It includes strengthening institutions and improving early warning communications and disaster planning and preparedness. Additionally, it establishes a mechanism to provide immediate and effective response to an Eligible Crisis or Emergency.

Through development of a National Adaptation Plan, the project will help improve the capacity of national and local government agencies to adapt to climate change, reduce disaster risk, and set priorities for resilient investments in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI).

The proposed coastal infrastructure intervention on Ebeye Island (construction of a seawall) has been shown to be the only feasible option to protect people and assets there against storms and sea level rise. Communities exposed to erosion, storm surges, king tides, and sea level rise can expect to benefit from the project through reduced risk of damage to housing and infrastructure in the coastal zone.

Initially planned to span a period of five years, the implementation period for PREP II was subsequently extended through to February 12, 2024, thanks to additional financing. Through these activities, the program aims to enhance the RMI’s capacity to respond to natural disasters and climate change impacts while simultaneously reducing the country’s vulnerability to these challenges.
